The Deep Landing Workshop Story

Deep Landing Workshop has its roots as a small craft shop operating in a converted farm shed on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. It was there in 1964 that Joe Ramsey, a machinist by trade, started creating light fixtures designed by his wife, Cynthia, a mother and housewife who had an eye for a fair curve. Her designs were inspired by colonial fixtures they saw visiting historical sites. Cynthia was able to elevate those simple utilitarian pieces into graceful interpretations that could stand proud.

In 1977, their son John Ramsey took over, leaving his courses at the University of Maine and settling into the slow execution of finely-crafted light fixtures. John steadily built a portfolio of work, executing designs for historic restorations, private residences, custom lighting vendors, and for architect’s commissions.

Over the last 30 years, Deep Landing Workshop has created custom lighting fixtures for projects across the United States, and has installed work in schools, inns, churches and public buildings. We expanded into our new shop in 2002, and our current workshop includes in-house spaces for blacksmithing, welding, electrical work, metalwork and carpentry. With a current team of owner John Ramsey and assistants Brad Schultz and Aaron Coner, we continue to maintain the spirit of small crafts and a commitment to making each piece a little bit better than the one before it.
